Solutions for anxiety

Anxiety: Worry dogs you constantly for no logical reason, and you imagine terrible things happening to you. Or maybe you’re fearful about taking trips or going to parties or meetings. If so, you might have generalised anxiety disorder. People with GAD experience “uncontrollable worrying,” says Dr. Peter Norton, director of the Anxiety Disorder Clinic at the University of Houston. Symptoms include chronic nervousness, trouble sleeping, and fatigue. Massage This heavenly therapy slows the release of stress hormones, such as cortisol, which are linked to anxiety, says Dr. Tiffany Field, director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine. Her research found that a month of weekly 20-minute massages lowers cortisol levels—”a very good objective index of anxiety,” she says—by 31 per cent. Massage also causes a relaxation response, which eases anxiety. Exercise “Exercise makes you pay attention to its sensations, such as breathing ...

Benefits of coffee

Image
Often people think of coffee just as a vehicle for caffeine,” writes Dr. Rob van Dam of the Harvard School of Public Health. “But it’s actually a very complex beverage,” containing hundreds of different chemical compounds. Grown in more than 70 countries around the world, coffee has something of a contentious history with health experts, who have long cautioned that over-consumption may be detrimental to our health. More recent studies, however, paint a rosier picture for the Coffee plant’s roasted berries (they’re not actually beans), suggesting that when consumed in moderate amounts — and without heaping on the sugar and cream — the magical stuff can harbor numerous potential health benefits. A look at a few of them: •Coffee may help fight depression. Start your day with a smile: A joint study from the National Institutes of Health and the AARP discovered that folks who quaffed four or more cups of java a day were 10 per cent less likely to be depressed th...

Quick remedies at home

When minor medical issues crop up (nosebleeds, insect stings, dandruff!), chances are your medicine cabinet already contains some effective—and surprising—fixes for what ails you. Here are common household items that do double duty, saving you a trip to the pharmacy—and cash in the process! Antacid: The effervescent type with sodium bicarbonate helps neutralize the acid that causes painful heartburn symptoms. “Antacid formulations such as Alka-Seltzer contain aspirin, an anesthetic that can help ease the sting and itch of insect bites,” says Howard Sobel, MD, a clinical attending physician in dermatology and dermatologic surgery at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City. He recommends making a paste with a crushed antacid tablet, a pinch of oatmeal (also a skin soother), and water and applying it to the skin. Results are immediate—and this DIY formula has a healing bonus that other anti-itch salves lack. “Calamine lotion contains zinc oxide, which can be dryi...

Even tropical fruits like bananas, mangoes, and papayas tend to have a lower glycemic index than typical desserts. Completely eliminate sugar-sweetened drinks. Eat a healthful type of protein at most meals, such as beans, fish, or skinless chicken. Choose foods with healthful fats, such as olive oil, nuts (almo...

Natural ways to lower blood pressure

Uncontrolled high blood pressure, commonly known as hypertension, has been said to kill in at least eight different ways. They include stroke, diabetes, kidney failure, heart attack, aneurysms, end-stage liver failure, coronary heart diseases and  sudden death. Emeritus Prof. of medicine, Oladipo Akinkugbe, describes high blood pressure as a condition that occurs when there is excessive pressure on the walls of the artery and adds that this causes damage to the blood vessels, as well as vital organs in the body when it is not controlled. Hypertension is also a major health concern for Africans. In Nigeria, about 57 million people are estimated to be hypertensive with many still undiagnosed.Akinkugbe says  this high incidence of hypertension is a major reason why many die suddenly from heart attack and stroke. High blood pressure is preventable and it is also manageable, so you need not die from it if you make efforts to control it. According to Akinkug...

Managing constipation in infants

Image
Dr. Rotimi Adesanya My daughter is three weeks old and she did not have a bowel movement for five days. She was miserable! I called my paediatrician and she told me this was normal for breastfed babies when they were going through a growth spurt. “She proceeded to tell me that if my baby seemed distraught by it, I should give her half of an infant glycerin suppository. Within 10 minutes of giving the suppository to her, she filled up the diaper with faeces and has been happy since.” — A concerned mother. I have also seen several mothers of neonates and infants with the same complaint of their babies’ inability to move bowel for up to 10 days. The babies are without any abnormality and they will start moving their bowels after rectal examination. This is partly due to the stimulation of the nerves innervating the rectum and they will not need any medication; while very few (about two per cent) may have an underlying medical condition and may need to be ...

What electronic gadgets can do to you

Image
A gadget is a device or appliance having a unique purpose and function. At the time of their invention, gadgets are often way ahead in terms of novelty and uniqueness. This is what makes them so desirable and ‘cool.’ That modern gadgets have changed the world is an understatement. No one wants to go back to the days of no television, no Internet and definitely no cell phone. Each day, tech companies churn out the latest versions of laptops and mobile phones, while household and kitchen appliances are not left out. While it is easy to get caught up in the rave of the moment, there is increasing scientific evidence linking ‘electropollution’ to the rise in cancer, birth defects, fibromyalgia, Alzheimer’s disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, depression, learning disabilities and even Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. According to the World Health Organisation, ‘electronic smog,’ created by electricity, is “one of the most common and fastest growing environmental infl...

Robotic approach for gastric cancer treatment

Surgeons at UC San Diego Health System have performed the region’s first robotic gastrectomy, a potentially lifesaving procedure to remove a section of the stomach after a diagnosis of gastric cancer. Aided by a da Vinci robot, surgeons remove the diseased tissue, perform a delicate reconstruction and remove local lymph nodes for further testing. “To treat the gastric cancer, we remove part or all of the stomach with five small incisions,” said Kaitlyn Kelly, MD, surgical oncologist at UC San Diego Health System. “The goal of the robotic approach is to remove the cancer and carefully extract nearby lymph nodes in a highly precise way to achieve a more accurate cancer staging.” Kelly’s patient, a woman of Korean descent, was diagnosed with stomach cancer after reporting upper abdominal pain to her physician. Korean men and women are five to seven times more likely than Caucasians to develop gastric cancer, which is the fourth most common cancer worldwide. Also known a...

Foods that benefit their body part look-alikes

The age-long aphorism, which states that “You are what you eat,” seems to hold true in all areas of life. Nutritionists would have us believe, for instance, that you cannot eat like a horse and be as thin as a snake. It’s a case of garbage in, garbage out. If you eat foods that are lacking in fibre, you will soon discover the consequences as you groan in pain to pass stool, in addition to other health implications of bad dietary habits. Beyond this, however, experts note that certain foods do look like human organs — whether internal or external — and that they do have healing effects on such parts, especially when we make it a habit of eating them regularly before we fall ill. They advise that foods from nature are excellent for health and that we should eat more of such to stay fit and maintain moderate weight. Such foods include: Carrot and eyes When a carrot is dissected, the interior structure looks very much like the anatomy of the eye, what with the pupil, i...

Getting the best out of your car

If you take the time to do a routine preventive maintenance of your car, you may prolong the vehicle’s life and avoid costly major repairs. In order to keep your car in the best shape possible, it is imperative to keep up with the maintenance schedule that is detailed in your owner’s manual. Automobile engineers say modern cars require enough maintenance if the owner must enjoy his vehicle. According to them, many car users have not adjusted their thinking to keep pace with new car maintenance schedules. Those with tight engagements run their vehicles without service until the dash board warning light burns out, while a few affluent others fret about running synthetic oil more than 2,500 miles without a change. And most times, they do this without even knowing it. The maintenance schedule for cars varies, but the truth is that even the newest car needs adequate maintenance if the owner desires an optimal performance. Brand new vehicles come with owner’s maintenance ma...

Should you buy a new or second hand vehicle?

The author of ‘Practical Steps to Financial Freedom and Independence,’ Usiere Uko, writes about the basic things to consider when deciding whether to buy a brand new or second hand car. I tend to get a bit upset when it is time to renew my car’s insurance. It is not because I feel I am throwing money away. I truly appreciate insurance and the peace of mind it brings, especially in these ‘ember’ months when reports of car snatching are on the rise. Also, my insurance company has been very nice to me. What I find upsetting is finding out the current market price of my car, knowing how much I bought the car brand new. I find the depreciation annoying because I know what I would have done with the money rather than lose it to depreciation just like that. Does it make sense to throw away so much money in the name of driving a brand new car? Wealthy folks also buy second hand According to a 20-year study of 500 millionaires and more than 1,000 high net worth individuals, T...

It’s not macho to neglect your health

Men don’t go to doctors unless they’re in serious pain. In a 2007 American Academy of Family Physicians survey, 58 percent of men cited specific factors, such as lack of time, lack of insurance, and lack of extreme symptoms, as reasons for avoiding physicians. Sure, a number of miscellaneous ailments resolve themselves without medical attention. But denial can also leave you dead. A smarter move: Regularly assess your health with a few morning inspections that are easy and accurate. They aren’t replacements for routine doctor visits, but these do-it-yourself checkups can help you sort the trivial from the troubling. Your gums What’s the big deal? Any redness, inflammation, or bleeding of your gums might be due to gingivitis, a condition that can progress to periodontal disease. This, in turn, is linked to heart disease — the number one killer of men. How? The bacteria from periodontal disease enter your bloodstream, potentially causing inflammation elsewhere in you...

Keeping it clean down there

Image
Do you know that no fragrance, however potent, can overpower an offensive odour from the genital area? By that, we mean the vagina, anus and other organs of the groin. In a new study published in the Journal of Internal and Reproductive Medicine, researchers say that the state of your genital is the best way a woman can know if she is healthy or not. They note that though it is not every smell or discharge from the area that is abnormal,   it is also  perfectly natural to have a slight sweet smell that is non-offensive. But a strong and foul odour is a strong indication of an infection.  Chief Gyneacologist at the May Clinic , New York, Dr. Anthony Parks, says apart from sexually transmitted infections,  a smelly crotch could result from  poor personal or genital hygiene. He says,“The genital area is moist and warm. Bacteria can grow easily there. Excretions from the vagina, perspiration and urine can build up thereby making it ev...
