‘Lassa fever kills 5,000 annually in Jos’ written by by Jude Owuamanam (Punch)

Chief Medical Director of the Jos University Teaching Hospital, Dr. Ishaya Pam, has said about 5,000 patients die in the hospital from Lassa Fever yearly. He said the hospital also records between 300,000 to 500,000 cases of the disease on a yearly basis. No fewer than two persons had died from the disease in Plateau State this year. Pam spoke at a sensitisation workshop on Lassa fever for health care workers/professionals and staff of the ministry, organised by the Federal Ministry of Health, at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital, on Wednesday. The CMD, who was represented by a consultant on Public Health, Prof Chika Ogbenna, lamented that the hospital lacked the facilities for early and easy diagnosis of the disease, adding that the nearest facility for diagnosing the disease could only be found at Irrua Specialist Hospital in Edo  State. Policemen from Meiran Police Division in Ifako-Ijaiye Local Government, Lagos State have rearrested Mr. Taju Adejumo, who allegedly raped and impregnated a minor, Deborah Jolaosho. It was learnt that Adejumo was arrested on Wednesday and immediately charged to an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court. PUNCH Metro on Wednesday did an expose on how the 15-year-old girl was allegedly raped, deflowered and impregnated by the 40-year-old welder.                Before July 2012 the families of Israel Jolaosho and Taju Adejumo, of Adefemi Ogundipe Street, Meiran in Ifako Ijaiye Local Government Area of Lagos State, were best of friends. But the relationship went sour recently after Adejumo, 40, allegedly raped Jolaosho’s 15-year-old daughter, Deborah. After the rape, Deborah, who was a virgin, missed her period. subsequent medical examination showed that the 15-year-old pupil of Meiran Community Junior Secondary School was pregnant. When Punch Metro visited the Jolaoshos on Monday, Deborah was seven-month pregnant and had been forced to drop out of school because of her condition. Deborah told PUNCH Metro that on the fateful day, her mother, Rachel, had asked her to go to a construction site and bring back a plastic drum borrowed from her by Adejumo.
