Ethiopian Airlines Ends Talks Over Nigeria's Arik Air, Gets Offers in Zambia, Ghana

Ethiopian Airlines is no doubt Africa’s queen of the skies! The airline’s success story is attracting more attention to it as having the potential to revive other African airlines.
 Ethiopian airline was recently in the news in Nigeria as being considered to manage Nigeria’s largest airline; Arik Air. Reports even said negotiations with the Nigerian government over Arik Air had made considerable progress.
But the shocker is that Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO Tewolde Gebremariam has told the media that his company ceased talks with AMCON over Arik due to the complex nature of the negotiations. “We decided to stop the negotiation due to financial and legal complications,” he confirmed.
Gebremariam said Ethiopian remains interested in starting an airline in Nigeria and considering two initiatives: proposed national airline by the government of Nigeria or possibility of working with private Carriers.
It will be recalled that the government of Nigeria through the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), took control of Arik Air in February 2016 over alleged financial indebtedness and has been running the operations since then.
Ethiopian airline has 45% stake in the newly re-launched Zambia Airways while Ghana is reportedly considering the airline as a partner for the re-establishment of a national carrier.
Ethiopian airline is currently a beautiful bride with too many suitors. The airline has a responsibility to negotiate terms that will not deplete her fortunes in the long run.
