Fresh Fuel Scarcity Hits Aviation Sector(Guardian, Leadership, Sun, Daily Trust)

• Air Peace urges quick intervention
Another round of fuel scarcity hit the aviation sector at the weekend, leaving operators struggling to keep scheduled flights running.
The scarcity peaked yesterday in places like Lagos and Abuja where operators cancelled almost all flights.
Meanwhile, oil marketers responsible for the importation and supply of the aviation fuel, also known as Jet-A1, have blamed the high cost of foreign exchange for the current crisis.

Executive Secretary of Major Oil Marketers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN), Obafemi Olawole, told The Guardian that the current rate of N320 plus to one dollar being offered banks discourages importers to bring in the essential commodity.
At the General Aviation Terminal (GAT) of the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA), Lagos for instance, no airline was ready for boarding, leaving passengers stranded as at about 3pm yesterday before the eventual cancellation of flights.
A travel agent, Abiodun, told our reporter that the airlines had continued to ration flight services to some high-traffic destinations all morning, but all came to an abrupt end around 2:00 p.m. yesterday.
The situation was slightly relaxed at the Murtala Muhammed Airport II (MMA2) terminal, where operators like Dana Air and Aero Air continued skeletal services but not without delays “due to operational reasons”.
In a related development, a player, Air Peace, has appealed to government to urgent intervene in the crisis, saying the development has disrupted operations.

Arik Warns Scarcity of Aviation Fuel May Cripple Flight Operations(Thisday)

Nigeria’s major carrier, Arik Air has warned that air travel may be crippled by the increasing prices of aviation fuel, known as Jet A1, which has recorded over 35 per cent increase in the last four weeks.
The airline has therefore alerted air travelers that there was severe scarcity of the product as the prices continued to increase.
The airline said the scarcity became evident few days ago when oil marketers started rationing the supply of the product to the airlines and explained they had limited stock at the depots.
“The situation is critical in Lagos and Abuja, the operational hubs of Arik Air and the airline has warned that if the situation is not addressed as a priority by the marketers, more flights could be delayed or cancelled,” the airline said in a statement signed by its
spokesman, Adebanji Ola.
He said the airline, which was the largest consumer of aviation fuel in Nigeria as it operates more than 120 daily flights and its daily fuel requirement was about 500,000 liters.

Dana Decries Delays Caused by Paucity of Aviation Fuel (Thisday)

Dana Air has said the delay caused by inadequate supply of aviation fuel is hurting its principal value of on-time performance.
The airline reiterated its commitment to improving on-time performance, which it said, was the core of its excellent services, when it took to the skies on November 10, 2008.
According to the Accountable Manager of the airline, Mr. Obi Mbanuzuo, Dana Air has always taken the lead in ensuring that passengers get to their destinations on schedule, but recent delays due to shortage of fuel supply has not really helped its flight
services to the flying public.
“We sincerely apologise to our teeming guests for the delays experienced recently and regret the inconveniences caused. The recent delays have not really helped our desire and commitment to take our passengers to their destinations on schedule.’’
Obi commented further: “The issue is antithetical to our award winning service and we have been proactive in seeking better handling of operational issues. We will not relent in our efforts but continue to strive to improve on our services and offerings.’’
Dana Air recently launched flight services from Lagos to Owerri with an introductory online fare of N12, 600, to further boost business and leisure travel to the Imo state capital.
