African Export-Import Bank Strengthens Ties with Arik
The African Export-Import Bank,
(Afreximbank) has said that it stated partnering with Nigeria’s biggest
carrier, Arik air from inception and pledged to continue to strengthen
its relationship with the airline.
The bank said it would give the Nigerian
carrier support in the areas it can in recognition of the current
economic challenges facing the country.
According to the President of the Bank,
Benedict Oramah, “We are doing this because of the essential role Arik
Air is playing in connecting people across Africa and making sure goods
are delivered across the continent. So, we want to make sure they are
strengthened to do that. We also understand the difficulties in the
environment, not only in Nigeria, but in most African countries.
“So, at this time, as a bank created to
deal with or support our clients under such situations. We also wanted
to be briefed on how these things are affecting the company and what we
can do to make sure they ride through the situation,” Oramah explained
after a facility tour of Arik with top officials from the bank.
He reiterated that Arik is a
long-standing client of the Bank as they have worked together for
several years, building a mutually rewarding partnership.
He disclosed that the bank had supported
the airline in acquiring some of their aircraft, adding that Arik Air
has lived up to the bank’s expectations.
“So this visitation is essential for us
as a bank to see what the airline is doing and to listen to them about
their future plans because we are promoting intra African trade with
Arik Air as a strategic partner in promoting intra-African trade,”
Oramah added.
FG Under Pressure to Rescue Airlines
-
Mulls bailout funds with low interest rates, others
The Federal Government is under immense pressure to rescue Nigerian carriers from extinction, as it weighs options that would allow the airlines remain afloat. New Telegraph learnt that the Minister of State for Aviation, Hadi Sirika, is tinkering with many options.
Among such options is to write a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari on the need to offer fresh bail out to the carriers. But this option seems not to be popular with stakeholders in the aviation industry who felt disappointed that the over N180 billion given to the airlines some seven years ago was not judiciously utilised by the carriers.
Aero Contractors, which the Assets Management Corporation (AMCON) had taken over 60 per cent of its equity, owes N30 billion and Air Nigeria, N35 billion, as intervention fund collected by the management of the airline, which has been declared bankrupt and stopped operations, while IRS Airlines was said to have received N9.4 billion.
Reps Kick Against Concessioning Of Airports
The
House of Representatives Committee on Aviation has kicked against the
planned concessioning of airports, suggesting that it will have an
adverse effect on the economy.
The committee also advised President Muhammadu Buhari to ignore calls to sell some national assets in the face of the economic recession.
Reacting to calls by some eminent Nigerians to sell public assets, chairman of the committee, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, argued that selling such assets was not the way to solve the country’s current problem.
She noted that the country must protect the $12 billion projected investment and 159,000 jobs provided across the value chain.
According to her, the current economic recession , if not checked, poses a great risk to the job security of over 400 pilots, including expatriates, 1,200 crew members and more than 1,000 travel agencies, in addition to harming the nation’s economy.
“The proposed privatisation/concession is done without recourse to the provisions of the extant Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria Act, which at the moment, has attracted over 60 cases of litigations pending in various courts of law, arising from the shady nature of the deals and arrangements,” she said.
