The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority
says it will convene a meeting with foreign airline operators over their
alleged rejection of naira payment for flight tickets.
The General Manager, Public Relations,
NCAA, Mr Sam Adurogboye, on Tuesday confirmed that the NCAA had received
complaints from some passengers.
Adurogboye said that the passengers had the right to make payments in naira.
He noted that the industry was facing
some challenges, particularly the scarcity of foreign exchange and
inability of foreign airlines to repatriate their funds.
He said, “The truth is that the airlines
are beginning to reject the naira because of the special circumstances
that they have found themselves.
“In the BASA agreement, when you sell
your tickets, you should be able to repatriate your money; but
presently, the airlines are finding it hard to take their money home.

Moving a motion tagged: “The looming crisis in the Nigerian aviation industry,” Senator Samuel Anyanwu(PDP, Imo ) said there was need for the federal government to grant the bailout fund to airline operators.
“A couple of weeks ago, Aero contractors, Medview , First Nation, Arik Air and some others, airlines suspended their operations as a result of poor economic activities and other surrounding factors affecting the industry, “ he said.
When the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, raised a question on the bailout, the senators voted against it.
Speaking against the bailout, Senator Ibrahim Gobir (APC, Sokoto) said that the airline operators should rather seek for soft loan from financial institutions, arguing that the N350bn bailout fund previously given to the sector was not properly utilised.

THE Q400 planes manufacturer, Bombardier Inc, has commented that Tanzania is set to boost air travel after purchasing the ‘’extremely efficient and cost effective planes’’ also preferred by developed countries.
The national carrier, Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL), in recent times, remained a mere spectator as both gigantic and medium-sized airlines battled for the country’s skies. The government had signed a firm purchase agreement for two Q400 turboprop airliners with Bombardier Commercial Aircraft in July.
Starting as a maker of snow machines or snowmobiles, it has, over the years, grown into a large manufacturer of regional airliners, business jets, mass transportation equipment, recreational equipment and a provider of financial services. President John Magufuli is today expected to lead a high-powered government delegation in the official launching of the planes.
The aircrafts delivered with a 76-seat, dual-lavatory configuration are owned by the Government Flight Agency (TGFA). The planes, according to the TGFA Acting Chief Executive Officer, Mr Raymond Musingi, are to be leased to the cash-strapped ATCL.
Mr Musingi clarified to the ‘Daily News’ that the national carrier, which is now set to revive its lost glory, will have to forge business partnership with the agency for successful management of the newly purchased planes.
