JET A1 Scarcity in Nigeria: Arik Air Scales Down Flight Operations
There is
another wave of fuel scarcity in the troubled aviation sector of Nigeria and
Arik Air; Nigeria's largest carrier has alerted passengers that it has cut down
the volume of flights in order to manage the impact of the scarcity and pleaded
for the understanding of her customers whose flights are likely to be affected
by the scarcity and reduction of flight services.
In a statements
made available to the media, Arik Air explained that “The aviation fuel
scarcity started manifesting last week when major oil marketers began to ration
supply of the product to airlines. One of the marketers issued a Notice to
Airmen (NOTAM) on Saturday alerting of non-availability of the product in
Lagos. Another marketer said it was running out of product in Lagos with
limited supplies in Port Harcourt and Abuja".
The statement
signed by the airline's Public Relations Manager Mr. Adebanji Ola added "As
a result of the worsening supply situation of the aviation fuel, Arik Air has
announced further reduction in flights from Wednesday, November 16 to cope with
the fresh scarcity, and reduce the unpleasant delays and cancellations which
passengers have experienced in recent times"
Arik Air
disclosed that text messages would be sent to passengers whose flights are
affected and urged passengers to also to contact her call centre on 01 2799999
or 08077791683 for enquiries about their flights.
Arik Air operates a minimum of 100
flights daily and consumes about 500,000 liters of fuel on a daily basis, so it
is not surprising that whenever issues like this arise, the airline is usually
the worst hit. One can unarguably say that whatever affects Arik Air's flights
operations affects the entire Nigeria's Aviation Sector and therefore calls on
all concerned stakeholders to work round the clock to insure that the current
scarcity does not linger.
