Trying Times for Nigeria’s Aviation

“The industry is sick beyond remedy. The industry is going in one direction, government on another and government goes the other way because the players are singing discordant tunes”.
The above were the words of President of the industry think-thank group, Aviation Round Table, Elder Gabriel Olowo voicing out his frustration on the numerous challenges confronting the nation’s aviation sector at a recent ART Forum.
Indeed his comment could not be further from truth as the aviation sector wobbles under the abyss of high exchange rate which has made the business of aviation very ‘prohibitive’ according to airline operators; scarcity of aviation fuel, dwindling
passengers/dwindling revenue; unending controversy over debt; dearth of skilled workforce/ageing workforce, among others.

It was learnt that the returnees arrived in the country on Tuesday around 3.45pm through the Muritala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos State.
They were said to have been received by the officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, who assisted them with food and transport fares.
Some of them, who were sick, were reportedly taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for treatment.
The spokesperson for NEMA, South-West zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, confirmed the development, saying the returnees had been dispatched to their various destinations.
He explained that of the 241 repatriated, 174 were males while 67 were females.
He said, “The International Organisation for Migration facilitated the repatriation of 241 Nigerian returnees from Libya today (Tuesday).
“The breakdown indicates that 67 were females (six under 18 years and four under four years) and 174 males (three under 18 years and one under four years).
“Three of the sick returnees, two females and one male, are currently receiving medical treatments at LASUTH.
