Anxiety as Abuja airport closes in February

The Federal Government of Nigeria is considering shutting down the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja in February in order to relay the runway.According to DailyTrust sources, the maintenance has become necessary following threats by some international airlines to stop landing in Abuja due to heavy damage the runway has suffered over the years. The stretch of runaway that is currently in use at the airport has fallen just short of the International Civil Aviation (ICAO) regulations and doesn’t give sufficient room for manoeuvre in case of any emergency and this has caused the international airline operators to worry about safety.According to experts, the option available is to undertake a two-week maintenance work on the damaged parts of the runway, which is projected to give the runway an extended lifespan of two years.Government is set to award the contract o German construction firm, Julius Berger to relay the entire runway, a project that is estimated to take about six weeks and could give the runway a lifespan of 10 years.
